AJKP are responsible for delivering the justice and security services to an estimated population of 4.5 Million spread over an area of 13297 SQ KM through a network of 40 police stations manned by its 9000 personnel.


Starting of in 1947 as the successor of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State Police Service with a meager strength of 900, it has come a long way to its present organizational structure and strength of 9000. Nevertheless, AJKP continues to remain governed and regulated by the antiquated colonial legal framework comprising the Police Act 1861 and Police Rules 1934.
